Patients want specific doctorly advice, but they also want a trusted source to pick out “just the berries” from the world’s myriad of resources. They have different styles of learning; many are web savvy, but some are web naïve. Some want to read a book and others want to talk to someone. People want to titrate their information; sometimes they want the full download, other times they just want the bottom line. Most want it to be something they can fit into their busy schedules and highlights local talent and resources.

Problem

Insomnia is incredibly common, yet like most common problems, the solution is often multifaceted and different for different individuals. The cause might be caffeine, sedentary lifestyle, a newborn, anxiety, shift work, menopause, or poor work-life balance. It might be one thing or many. Can we build a low cost resource that fits all of these needs and can be imbedded in the busy clinic but also at the point of curiosity, whether that is at the clinic but more likely at home or work?

Solution: The 5-Minute Med School

This Health Design Lab solution is a 2 page PDF with summarized information on both sides. On the front are the 5 key things you need to know about the health problem summarized with actionable items listed. On the back is the “2-Best Toolkit”: best websites, books, 1-800, blogs, videos, social networks, etc. all hyperlinked. Users can tailor their experience and spend their important time with the highest quality resources. This can be provided in the clinic, snail-mailed, imbedded in common media sources, patients can sign up to receive an emailed version, or they can simply download it.
