Elevated blood sugar levels increase the risk of the development of complications of diabetes including blindness, kidney failure and leg amputations. Medications which lower blood sugar such as metformin, have a very important role to play in preventing the development of these complications.
However, many people don’t understand the importance of taking their medication consistently. Perhaps if they were given more information on the benefits of a medication and not just the side effects, they would be better able to make an informed decision about taking a medication every day.
